The Department of Natural Sciences has just introduced a new major: Environmental Studies. Its objective is to foster an integrated understanding of environmental issues encompassing perspectives from the curriculum’s three broad disciplines - humanities, natural science, and social science. This will offer abundant opportunities for students to supplement their academic learning with experiences outside the classroom.

MMC’s fourth president, Sister Colette Mahoney, who served MMC as president for twenty-one years and received the President’s Medal in 1988, died peacefully on the 14th day of June, 2013.

It took Carol Berman 38 years to graduate from college. Through financial challenges, a teenage marriage, single parenthood at 23, a breast cancer battle and a double mastectomy last year, Carol graduated Friday, May 24, 2013, from Marymount Manhattan College with a BA in psychology. There’s no surprise that she was awarded the College’s Rowley Founder’s Medal for overcoming adversity to attain educational achievement. Did we mention her GPA is 3.945?
- May 18, 2013New York, N.Y.—Jason Rosenfeld, Ph.D., Distinguished Chair and Professor of Art History at Marymount Manhattan College, has curated an exhibition featuring the luminescent works of American landscape painter Stephen Hannock, the artist’s first comprehensive exhibition in New York in seven years, currently on view through June 2 at the Marlborough Gallery, located at 40 West 57th Street in Manhattan. In addition to large-scale paintings, the exhibition includes a room documenting Hannock’s process.

Picking their way carefully over the uneven ground, a group of Umbra Institute students from Marymount Manhattan College followed Bartolini – and the truffle-hunting Sole – as the farmer showed the class around the woods and meadows of his farm, nestled in the Tiber River Valley in northern Umbria, Saturday.

They can also be the subject of a scientific research project. At Marymount Manhattan College (MMC), science faculty and students are mentoring a group of science teachers and secondary school students studying cellular reaction to identify the best home remedy to treat a jellyfish sting.

New York, NY – Ashley Cintron ’10, an MMC communication arts graduate, received one of 10 national H. Y. Benedict Fellowships from Alpha Chi for her first year of graduate study in 2010-2011. The Benedict Fellowship awarded Cintron $2,500 for her video submission, a 15-minute documentary about homelessness in New York City that she co-produced with communication arts major Victoria Preston ’10, under the advisement of Assistant Professor Giovanna Chesler, M.F.A. This year, the documentary also received the Best Documentary award at MMC’s communication arts showcase.

Marymount Manhattan College is proud to present The Jack and Lewis Rudin Distinguished Visiting Scholars Lecture at 6:30 p.m., March 17, in The Theresa Lang Theatre. This year’s featured speaker is Dr. Richard West Sellars, retired National Park Service Historian, noted author and Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow. His lecture is titled, “America’s National Parks and the Rise of an Environmental Ethic.”

(New York, NY) On January 20, 2009, about 60 members of the MMC community gathered in the Nugent Lounge to watch the Presidential Inauguration. As the College watched the broadcast, two Marymount Manhattan College students were in the crowd that witnessed it firsthand. President and vice-president of MMC’s Student Political Association Holly Dougherty ’09 and Farah Minwalla ’11 observed President Barack Obama’s inauguration amid a crowd of nearly two million people in the span between the U.S. Capitol and the Washington Monument.

Maureen graduated from Marymount Manhattan in 1960 with a double major in English and Philosophy. She has dedicated her career to higher education in a variety of capacities, as a scholar, professor, division chair, dean and vice president.

(New York, NY) On May 2, 2008 New York City’s community and dance supporters gathered for the 17th Annual Champagne Gala Benefit at Marymount Manhattan College. The event raised a total of $25,325, which supports Marymount Manhattan’s Dance Department, its programs, choreographers and costumes and sets. The benefit honored Robert Swinston, assistant to Merce Cunningham, who served as the 2008 Honorary Chair for the benefit performance and reception.
